Roller Derby History How Does It Work?
How the Heck Does the Game Work?

THE TEAMS: Each team has no fewer than ten girls; however, only five girls from each team are on the track at one time: Three blockers, one pivot (striped helmet) and one jammer (star helmets).

THE PACK: The pivots are the leaders and the pacesetters for the pack. The blockers stay together behind them - they are the defensive skaters. Behind them are the two jammers - they score the points. When the ref blows a double whistle, the jammers start sprinting.

THE JAM: The jam starts at the double whistle. The jammers sprint up to and through the pack. The first jammer to make it through without going out of bounds is designated the lead jammer. She then can call off the jam at any time by putting her hands on her hips. Both jammers have to make it through the pack and lap it once in order to score. After that, each jammer gets a point for every opposing skater she passes in bounds. The rest of the team's job is to stop the opposing jammer from scoring while helping their own jammer score. Each jam is a maximum of two minutes in duration.

THEY CAN' T DO THAT! Skaters cannot use any part of the arm below the elbow (including hands) to block block with feet or trip, block from the rear, grab, pull or elbow in an upward or downward motion, or fall intentionally to block.

No skater is allowed to cut the track, foul a skater who is down or touch or harass the refs...A one-minute stretch in the penalty box will be doled out accordingly! The penalty wheel then gets a spin from the biggest offenders from each team at the end of the quarter. The refs can also banish a player from the game as they see fit!
