Frequently Asked Questions

When and where is your next bout? Where can I buy tickets?
Our 2006 season opener is on April 1 and will feature Rocky Mountain Rollergirls taking on the Sin City Rollergirls in the mile high! Tickets go on sale March 10 at Bladium and Twist and Shout and cost $13.

Is Roller Derby real?
Heck yes! We are not a staged, circus-style act. Flat track roller derby requires skill, strategy and a fearless defiance of good sense. Staged antics have been replaced with bone-crunching takeouts. Our elbow and hip-dodging Jammers are too determined to score points to slow down, but do we forget to put on a show? Never!

Are the scores and winners decided before the game?
No way! We may seem like friends off the track, but each team hits the ground knowing that they could win or they could lose.

Do y'all get hurt at bouts?
Sometimes. Roller Derby is a full contact sport. We wear safety gear -- helmets, mouthguards, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards -- and we have insurance to help us out when accidents happen. Accidents do happen—we do our best to be as safe as possible.

Who are the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls?
The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls are sexy, athletic, tough-minded, big-hearted women who have been taking Denver by storm since August 2004. The league is the first, the original, flat-track all-female in Denver.

In addition to regular season bouts, Rocky Mountain Rollergirls’ 2006 season features participation in inter-league bouts: We’ll travel around the country and host other states’ teams here, at home.

We're competitors on the rink but off the track, we embrace a few common values:

  • Supporting female empowerment
  • Supporting diversity
  • Being an active part of the national coalition of all-female, flat-track leagues and contributing to the long-term health of the world’s greatest sport
  • Putting on the best bouts we can for our fans
  • Ensuring the success of the league by putting in as much time off the track as we do on the rink
  • Ensuring skater safety at all times, which means being serious about practice and skating hard and often
  • Supporting the local community and local businesses
  • Contributing to local charities with time and money
  • Doing it all DIY style and maintaining the heart of our grassroots foundation

How do I become a Rocky Mountain Rollergirl?

We're recruiting girls 21 and over who are ready to take the plunge and get down and derby mile-high style. E-mail info@rockymountainrollergirls for a new recruit packet!

What's your training schedule like?
We have three official on-rink practices every week that consist of endurance training, derby-specific drills, scrimmage games, and strength work. The month before bouts, team practices will also be arranged. And because we're all obsessed with skating, you'll often find us skating at open skates around the city or rolling through local parks.

How often do Rocky Mountain Rollergirls have bouts?
We get down and derby about five times a year. During our travel season you're sure to find an inter-league duel against one of the 30 other flat-track derby leagues. Plus we have special events all around Denver.

How do you select the charities you donate to?
Charities are nominated by the members of the league and a league-wide vote determines who will receive our donation. Rocky Mountain Rollergirls have donated to several organizations, including: www.wm3.org, Colorado Humane Society, Aidswalk, Turkey Trot (put on by Mile High United Way), and Bonfils Blood Center to name a few.

How can me or my company get in on the hottest new sport in Denver?
That’s easy! Sponsor the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. We have several sponsorship packages available—including individual sponsorships. Just e-mail Zoom Zoom Zetta at suzette1023@yahoo.com.

I know a band or entertainment act that wants to get in on the some rollergirl action—how do I get them in touch with the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls?
Just shoot Pinky 500, our Events Director, an e-mail at pinky_500@rockymountainrollergirls.com! We’re always looking for like-minded, unsaintly souls to help us take over the world!

Can I be a Volunteer?
Absolutely! We’re a strictly do-it-yourself league and we’re always looking for folks to pitch in. From ticket takers to referees (don’t be scared, we’ll teach you the game), we want YOU to join our forces. Shoot and e-mail to rmrollergirls@yahoo.com and find out how to get involved in our most exciting year yet!

Do Rollergirls Get Paid?
No skaters are paid for the work they do on or off the track. In fact, we have to pay monthly dues to cover uniforms, gear, practice space, insurance and bout space. Any profits we make are put back into the league for things like supporting our travel team and paying for the entertainment that makes our bouts top notch! Watch for us at our fundraisers around town if you want to help us in this effort!

What are the rules?
First, you should know that there are three positions:

  • Pivot: sets the pace for the pack and is the last line of defense

  • Blocker: tries to stop the jammer, knocks around the opposing team's blockers

  • Jammer: sprints through the pack, scoring points by passing members of the opposing team
The pack starts with a pivot from each team in front, 3 blockers from each team in the middle, and a jammer from each team in the back. When the whistle blows, the pack takes off, and on a second whistle, the jammers start fighting their way through the pack in an attempt to be named "lead jammer." The jammers lap the pack and when they re-enter the pack, the receive one point for each member of the opposing team that they pass. A jam lasts a maximum of two minutes, but the "lead jammer" has the right to call off the jam at her discretion.

It sounds simple, but it's not ... 'cause there are two little things called "falling" and "fighting" that fill some jams with mayhem, violence, and penalties. Hell, yeah.
