Some are self-applied, some are given to skaters, but all are hard earned. New skaters to roller derby typically use their real names until they have achieved skills required to earn full membership to a league. For some skaters, this happens quickly. Others may spend upwards of a year to develop the necessary skills to become full league members. A skater who uses a derby name has worked to reach these goals and other skaters address them by skater names as a sign of respect and acknowledgment of these achievements. Longer names are often shortened when spoken. For instance, RMRG's She Who Cannot Be Named is called "SheWho" on the league. Sometimes skaters known one another only by derby names. Ask a leaguemate if she knows Jenny or Ashley and you'll likely get an "uhhhh" in response. There is no right or wrong way to choose a derby name once earned. Descriptive, mysterious, clever, or otherwise, these names are badges of honor. As fellow skaters we respect one another and the names are registered on an international list and checked for originality before they are registered.
